Halloween Goes International

If you happen to be in Atlanta this Halloween, the Global Access Department of the Central Library has much and in many languages to frighten and delight.  We have ghosts, witches, epic struggles between good and evil, a few of the walking dead and some who are simply possessed (on page or screen, that is).

Read This Fall’s Hit Movies

Yet again a large number of fall films are based on books and plays. It’s always a good bet to get a copy of the book before the movie comes out, because by then everyone else has gotten the same idea! Here’s a list of fall films based on literature, just to give you a head start:

September
*The Duchess…based on Amanda Foreman’s excellent biography entitled Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire. Starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.
*Blindness…the story of the only seeing person when the world goes blind, based on Jose Saramago’s novel. Starring Julianne Moore and Gael Garcia Bernal.
*Appaloosa…a western starring Ed Harris and Viggo Moretensen, based on the Robert B. Parker novel.
*Choke…this Chuck Palahnuik novel is the story of a man, played by Sam Rockwell, who repays his mother’s hospital bills by swindling strangers who save him from choking to death.
*Nights in Rodanthe…Richard Gere and Diana Lane pair up for the third time in this romance from author Nicholas Sparks.

October
*How to Loose Friends & Alienate People…based on Toby Young’s memoir of a British writer trying to fit in in New York, starring Jeff Bridges and Simon Pegg
*Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist…this great teen novel written by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan gets the Hollywood treatment with Michael Cera and Kat Dennings
*What Just Happened?…Robert DeNiro tackles Art Linson’s story of a fading Hollywood producer
*City of Ember…another great teen book, this darker story by Jeanne Duprau stars Bill Murray as the Mayor of Ember
*Secret Life of Bees…Dakota Fanning, Paul Bettany and Queen Latifah star in this tale of 1964 South Carolina, based on Sue Monk Kidd’s novel

November
*Quantum of Solace…using the title from one of Ian Fleming’s short stories, this is the latest Bond film starring Daniel Craig
*Twilight…the popular vampire series by Stephenie Meyer finally hits theaters, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as Bella and Edward
*The Road…Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel is the tale of a father trying to get his son to safety in a dangerous world, starring Viggo Mortensen

December
*Frost/Nixon…based on Peter Morgan’s play, this is the story of the post-Watergate interviews by Frost of Nixon, starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella
*Doubt…based on the play by John Patrick Shanley, it’s the story of a nun who confronts a priest she suspects is abusing an African-American student. Stars Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman
*The Tale of Despereaux…an animated feature based on Kate DiCamillo’s story about a misfit mouse. Features the voices of Emma Watson and Matthew Broderick
*The Spirit…Gabriel Macht and Scarlet Johanssen bring the Will Eisner comic to life
*Revolutionary Road…Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet appear again as an onscreen couple, only this time as a dissatisfied married couple in this film based on on Richard Yates’ novel
*Marley & Me…John Grogan’s memoir is brought to life by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston

Crime Fighting Goes International

Grissom Gone From CSI

William Petersen, the actor who portrays Gil Grissom, the leader of the crim-fighting lab rats from CSI, has announced that he is leaving the show after the 10th episode of the upcoming season. He will continue on as executive producer and will make an occassional guest appearance. However, Grissom will no longer lead the Las Vegas CSI unit.

Luckily for all of you Grissom, and William Petersen, fans, AFPLS has many of his previous film and tv works available. You can check the catalog here to see which are available at your local branch. We have the following Peterson films & television shows available throughout the system:

    The French Collection

    Welcome to the French Collection!!! The French Collection contains a variety of magazines, books, DVD’s and CD’s. We have the Le Monde, the daily newspaper published in Paris, one of the most important and widely respected newspapers in the world.  We also have the most exciting movies and the most exquisite, relaxing music collection. Come out and check out our fantastic collection.

     L’Express is France’s first weekly news magazine. When founded in 1953 during the First Indochina War, it was modeled on the American magazine TIME. The magazine was supportive of the policies of Pierre Mendès-France in Indochina, and in general had a left-of-centre orientation. The magazine opposed the war in Algeria, and especially the use of torture.

     Le Monde is a French daily evening newspaper. It is considered the French newspaper of record, and is generally well respected, often the only French newspaper easily obtainable in non-Francophone countries.

    The Arabic Collection

    A small collection of Arabic materials is available in the Global Access Department at the Central Library.   There are books in a variety of subject areas such as fiction, poetry, religion, history and biography.  Most of the movies are VHS; a few are DVD’s.  All of the Arabic books and movies are available for circulation, and you can find these items  in the library catalog .
