What To Do When A Retiree Passes

While nobody likes to contemplate their own demise, it makes sense to be as prepared as possible so that loved ones are not unable to take care of business issues. For that purpose, we have developed some information points regarding your pension and life insurance as a guide for your loved ones.

While nobody likes to contemplate their own demise, it makes sense to be as prepared as possible so that loved ones are not unable to take care of business issues. For that purpose, we have developed some information points regarding your pension and life insurance as a guide for your loved ones. You can put this with your will and other important papers.

Regarding your pension, your pension will stop in the month of your death. The Pension Office should be contacted at 404-612-7672 as soon as possible. Pension payments made for the month of your death are yours. Any payments made after that month will need to be returned.

If you have a qualifying beneficiary (a spouse, partner in a certified committed relationship or a minor child under the age of 18 if there is no spouse or partner) a beneficiary pension may be due that person. The amount will depend on the plan you retired under. The Pension Office should be contacted at 404-612-7672 for an application and further instructions. The start-up time is usually four to six weeks once the Pension Office has all required documents.

If you do not have a qualifying beneficiary and the amount of your total pension payments is less than the total of your contributions, a refund is due for the difference.

As always, you should update your beneficiary information should there be a change.

To process life insurance claims the Pension Office needs the beneficiary’s name, mailing address, date of birth and social security number along with a certificated death certificate for each policy.

In order to do an assignment of the life insurance to a funeral home, the funeral home of choice must be contacted and told to contact the Pension Office, 404-612-4229. Once the funeral home contacts the pension office, we will verify the amount they ask for. After the funeral home gets the paperwork complete, then they will send it to the Pension Office along with the certified death certificate and we will process the claim.

Beneficiaries are eligible to continue health, dental, vision and pharmacy benefits. Life insurance maintained on the dependent beneficiary lapses after five months.
