Fulton County Board of Trustees votes to recommend modifying plan document to continue survivor benefits in the event survivor beneficiary remarries.
At its meeting on November 14, 2007, the FCERS Board of Trustees voted to modify the plan documant to provide for continued benefits for survivor beneficiaries in the event they remarry. Under the current plan language, benefits cease in the event the surviving spouse remarries.
The resolution, as adopted by the Board of Trustees reads as follows.
The Benefits Review Committee met on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, and reviewed the issue of the cessation of spousal survivor benefits should a surviving spouse remarry.
The Committee considered the actuarial impact to the plan and how other large public sector plans treat the issue of surviving spouse benefits. the Committee recommends to the full Board that the language of the plan document be amended to state: "Death Benefits shall be payable to the Eligible Spouse during the term of his natural life. It is recommended the phrase "so long as he remians unmarried" be stricken. It is further recommended that should the Eligible Spouse remarry that the new spouse NOT be eligible for retiree health, dental, vision or life insurance, but that the Eligible Spouse will continue with such benefits. And that the change be applied prospectively from the date of adoption.
This recommendation will need to be adopted by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners for it to become effective. |
