The dangers of smoking are widely known.   According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking causes about 90% of all lung cancer deaths and 80% of all deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).   This habit kills more women each year than breast cancer and increases the risk of contracting heart disease, stroke and many other ailments.   The CDC says since 1964 some 2.5 - million nonsmokers have died from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.

Smoking remains on the decline nationwide and the percentage of smokers in Fulton County (13%) is lower than the national average of 16.8%. ¬† ¬† Through the Freedom From Smoking¬ģ program, the Fulton County Board of Health works to help citizens who want to quit smoking reach their goal. ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†
