In March 2010, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, under the leadership of Commissioner Emma I. Darnell (District 5), voted to approve funding for the Environmental Justice Initiative (EJI) in Fulton County.Environmental Justice as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency is the fair and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies. Environmental Justice ensures that no group of people should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, governmental and commercial operations or policies. Fulton County is concerned about the environment (natural and built) and its affect on residents, workforce and visitors.

Goals, accomplishments and activities of the Environmental Justice program include:

  • Raise awareness of community groups about environmental justice and the health affects from the natural and built environments
  • Represent public health to steering committees, advisory boards, and community development projects
  • Developed the Community-Based Cleanup Guideline to assist community members in their community cleanup efforts
  • Conducted a Health Impact Assessment for the Fulton Industrial Boulevard Revitalization Framework
  • Participate as a member of the advisory group for the Aerotropolis Atlanta Brownfield Redevelopment Project in Hapeville, GA
  • Assist citizens using scientific evidence about their concerns regarding the health effects of their environment
  • Revise the Fulton County regulations addressing the handling and disposal of refuse, garbage, and rubbish
  • Promote the consideration of Environmental Justice and health impacts in project planning and implementation
