As a result of 2010 Census data, Fulton County has seen a surge in seniors 55 and older. The active “Baby Boomer” generation (55+) continues to fill senior centers and search for services for their aging parents and themselves. Seniors 65 and older are participating heavily in neighborhood centers throughout the County.  In response to the growing need, Fulton County wants first-hand knowledge of what residents need.

Beginning April 25, 2012, Fulton County, in collaboration with Kennesaw State University’s A. L. Burruss Institute for Public Service and Research, will conduct a State of Seniors survey to hear directly from seniors regarding their needs to age in place and remain safe, healthy and vibrant.  The survey will be provided online, by phone and through direct mail.  The results will be revealed during a State of Seniors Symposium scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.  The Symposium will be held at the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility located at 677 Fairburn Road in Atlanta.

The State of Seniors Symposium is a forum for aging services professionals, seniors and the community to meet and discuss the needs of the aging population.  The State of Seniors Symposium will provide the community with an in-depth perspective on the needs of individuals who are aging in place in efforts to highlight the realities of seniors living within Fulton County and identify areas for future planning.

On a daily basis, an average of 1,015 seniors 55 years and older visit Fulton County’s 4 senior multipurpose facilities and an average of 531 seniors visit neighborhood senior centers.  Seniors fill the centers to take advantage of fitness classes, therapeutic aquatics, nutrition education and arts and culture classes to maintain sharp minds and physical strength and fitness. The growing senior population and requests for services require the county to reach out to citizens to determine needs as Aging Services staff strategically plans programs and services for the next five – 10 years.
