Tips for Indoor Water Conservation

From the kitchen, to the bathroom and the laundry room, changing your habits can save money on your water bill and help conserve a vital resource.

General Indoor

  • Locate your master water shut-off valve in case a pipe bursts and you need to shut it off to avoid flooding.
  • Repair leaks. Even small leaks can waste 100 gallons of water each week.
  • Insulate your pipes. You’ll get hot water faster.

Kitchen

  • Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl filled with water instead of under running water
  • Run the dishwasher only when full
  • When it’s time to replace your dishwasher, invest in an energy efficient dishwasher
  • Don’t use running water to thaw food
  • Soak your pots and pans instead of letting the water run
  • Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost instead and save gallons every time
  • Install a faucet aerator to reduce the amount of water used

Bathroom

  • Take shorter showers - October is Shower Better Month!
  • Check toilet for leaks…they can be silent, but costly. From time to time place a dye tablet in the tank. After a few minutes, if you see color in the bowl, you have a leak.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and shaving
  • Flush only when necessary, and don’t flush tissue, cigarettes, or trash down the toilet
  • Use low flow showerheads
  • Install low flow toilets that use less water

Laundry

  • When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load
  • When it’s time to replace your washing machine, invest in an energy efficient washer to save water and money
  • Check faucet or hose connections for leaks and repair or replace when necessary
