Fulton County Smoke Free Initiative
“Barriers and Bridges – Integrating Science, Policy and Community Outreach to Combat Tobacco Use” panel discussion event was held on February 14, 2011 at Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness. The event marked the first step in a journey towards smoke free Fulton County. The foundation was laid for dialogue and defined opportunities and roles to address the current tobacco issue. Throughout the discussion, innovative ideas and suggestions were generated, new friendships and partnerships were formed and everyone in attendance learned the real impact of the tobacco problem in our community. The discussion also focused on the need to integrate and foster the collaboration and partnering skills necessary to achieve the objectives of smoke free communities. Fulton County is committed to carrying this effort forward. We welcome any action steps that will help to move us forward.

Diabetes Alert Day
“Breaking the Silence: Diabetes and its impact in Fulton County” event was held on March 22, 2011 at the Center for Health and Rehabilitation. A recent study published by CDC shows that America’s diabetes epidemic is particularly acute in Southeastern states like Georgia. The event marked the first step for the Fulton County Health Promotion division towards reducing the diabetes rate in Fulton County. Throughout the program, everyone in attendance learned the real impact of the diabetes problem in our community. Updates will continue to be provided on specific actions being taken to coordinate efforts. Moving forward with these plans, the division is committed to working in partnership with community organizations and stakeholders. Out of this movement, the Diabetes Community Action Coalition of Fulton County was created.

“It’s a Man’s World: Matters of the Heart”
On June 28, 2011, the Division of Health Promotion hosted a men’s health forum, “It’s a Man’s World: Matters of the Heart” at College Park Regional Health Center. The event marked the first step for the Fulton County Health and Wellness, Health Promotion Division towards a men’s heart health initiative. Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards presented a proclamation recognizing Men’s Healthy Heart Day in Fulton County. Fulton County Manager Zachary L. Williams addressed the audience as well. One objective of the seminar was to educate the community on challenges and opportunities regarding heart disease in men. The second objective was to identify collaborators interested in participating in this initiative in order to make a meaningful progress combating the number one killer of men in Fulton County.

The Division of Health Promotion is excited to announce the building of the Health Promotion Coalition. Kick off for the Health Promotion Coalition is expected to occur in October 2011.
