Neighborhood Union Health Center Provides STD Tests for Teens
April is STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Awareness Month and Fulton County’s Neighborhood Union Health Center Teen Clinic is the County’s newest resource for parents and teens to use to help prevent the spread of STDs.
Approximately 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in the United States and almost half of these are among young people aged 15 to 24 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
In 2008, the Fulton County Health District was 13th in the nation with 762 reported cases of Gonorrhea, 39th with 853 cases of Chlamydia and 4th in the nation with 20 cases of Syphilis compared to 64 in the entire state of Georgia.
Neighborhood Union, located at Sunset Avenue in Atlanta, is home to Fulton’s newest Teen Outreach Clinic to be located in neighborhoods with identified health disparities. The Teen Clinic opened in late January 2010 to serve Vine City teens and their families.Â
The NUHC Teen Clinic reaches out to two youth populations, “Tweens,” a unique population of youth between the ages of 10-12, who are "in between" childhood and being a teenager and teens 13-18 years old. The Clinic for Teens and “Tweens” meets every fourth Thursday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.
