The Fulton County Cooperative Extension kicks off a Fulton Kids- Healthy Kids Summer Camp Series beginning June 7 through 11, 2010. The series will take place at the 4-H Camp Fulton-Truitt Education Center located at 4300 Hershel Road in College Park.
The first camp, will serve rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders. A second camp scheduled for June 21-25, will enroll rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders, and the final camp beginning July 12-16, will be open to rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
The three one-week camps will combine recreational programs with fitness activities to promote healthy weight and eating habits in children. According to the CDC, obese children and adolescents are at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults. Risk factors for obese children are associated with cardiovascular disease. These health risks include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes.
Participating children will receive a camp t-shirt, a breakfast snack and lunch, enjoy field trips and participate in “KIDS GYM .“ Campers will also test their cooking skills in an “Iron Chef Competition.â€
The Iron Chef Competition will teach campers to prepare meals that the whole family can enjoy while helping them to incorporate vegetables into their meals. Campers will be divided into teams, provided a preselected recipe and ingredients, and a secret ingredient. Each team will prepare their dish according to the recipe, and each will be expected to use creativity to incorporate the secret ingredient. The dishes are judged and scored followed by an announcement of the winners during an awards ceremony.
Parents or guardians must pay a $25 registration fee and camp activities are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily. The doors open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. and children must be enrolled by May 20, 2010. For more information, contact Angela Simpson at 404-762-4077.
