Minority Mental Health Awareness Month Begins July 1 – Behavioral Health Services Available at Neighborhood Union | Print |

Behavioral health services are currently available at the Neighborhood Union Health Center located at 186 Sunset Avenue in Atlanta.  Neighborhood Union has integrated Behavioral health services in a continuing effort to reduce health disparities in Fulton County.  Citizens who use behavioral services at Neighborhood Union have access to individual counseling, group counseling, family counseling, medication management and nursing and physician assessments.

As National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month begins on July 1, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health reports disparities in the level of behavioral health services provided to racial and ethnic minorities compared to that of whites.  Current statistics indicate:

• African Americans are 30% more likely to report having serious psychological distress than Non-Hispanic Whites.

• Poverty level affects mental health status. African Americans living below the poverty level, as compared to those over twice the poverty level, are 4 times more likely to report psychological distress.

In general, minorities have less access to, and less availability of mental health services.

Neighborhood Union Health Center offers behavioral health treatment in addition to nutrition services, dental services WIC, employment search assistance and primary care all under one roof.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month began in July 2008 as the National Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Health Awareness Month by the U.S. House of Representatives to address mental health needs of minorities. The late writer was a committed advocate for those challenged by behavioral health issues.
