Fulton County Launches Green Restaurant Program | Print |

Fulton County is on the cutting edge in promoting environmentally sustainable practices in the food service industry

The Fulton County Department of Health Services is on the cutting edge in promoting opportunities for environmentally sustainable practices for the local food service industry. Fulton County has partnered with the Green Restaurant Association (GRA) to implement the GRA's highly esteemed environmental certification program throughout the County's 4,700 restaurants.

The Green Restaurant Program will support Fulton County restaurants who participate in the program in reducing waste, conserving energy and water, using greener chemicals, protecting health through smoke-free environments, and procuring more sustainable packaging and building materials. Participation in the program is voluntary and open to permitted food service establishments. Restaurants that meet particular environmental accomplishments will be able to boast a 2, 3 or 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant® logo co-branded between GRA and Fulton County. According to the National Restaurant Association, the restaurant industry is the second largest private-sector employer in the country.

Fulton County Health Services will host a kick-off event to launch the Green Restaurant Program in partnership with the Green Restaurant Association. One goal of the program is to help the county's restaurants be among the most environmentally responsible in the country. The kick-off will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fulton County Government Center in the Assembly Hall located at 141 Pryor Street, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30303.

Benefits of participating in the program include:

• Official designation as a certified green restaurant

• Supports providers of locally grown foods and manufactured products

• Recognition on the Green Restaurant Association web listing of certified restaurants
