The Georgia Engineering Alliance has named Kun Suwanarpa, P.E., Interim Director of Fulton County's Department of Water Resources, as Engineer of the Year for Government in recognition of her contributions to her profession and to the public.

The award was presented on February 16 as part of the 2013 Georgia Engineers Week Awards.

Ms. Suwanarpa has served with what is now the Fulton County Water Resources Department since 1999.  She said of the Engineer of the Year for Government award, "I am honored and humbled to be in the company of many distinguished nominees.  This recognition will not be possible without support from my staff and Fulton County Government."

Ms. Suwanarpa is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia with more than 35 years of experience in environmental engineering, specializing in water and wastewater treatment design and construction of large facilities.  Under her leadership at Fulton County, she has overseen major upgrades and expansion at the Camp Creek Water Reclamation Facility in South Fulton, and played a key role in the conception and implementation of the innovative Johns Creek Environmental Campus, which is the largest membrane bioreactor facility in North America.  She has been instrumental in negotiations with municipalities regarding intergovernmental agreements for water and wastewater services.

During Ms. Suwanarpa's tenure, Fulton County has carefully managed its water/sewer utility and currently has the lowest combined water and sewer rates provider in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

Ms. Suwanarpa earned a Master's degree in Sanitary Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  She has been active in the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), earning numerous awards acknowledging her leadership and professional contributions.

Earlier in her career Ms. Suwanarpa served with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division under the leadership of former EPD Director J. Leonard Ledbetter. Ms. Suwanarpa said, "I am grateful to be selected as 2013 Engineer of the Year in Government.  It is very special to me as it was also the award that Mr. Ledbetter, for whom I have high regard and respect, received while serving as Director of EPD."
