Space Still Available for Fulton County Citizens' University 2013 | Print |

Space is still available for Fulton County’s Citizens University Class for 2013.  This program, in its ninth year, offers residents the opportunity to interact with government finance managers, tax commissioners, police officers and other officials.

When classes begin on April 4, 2013, Fulton County Citizens’ University participants will get a first-hand look at how government operates and services provided to its citizens.

The 12-week program offers interactive “real world” classes that acquaint participants with the inner workings of Fulton County government.  Students receive the opportunity to set a budget, tour County facilities, go behind the scenes with police officers, and experience the challenges encountered by firefighters as they save lives.  They will also meet with County department directors to learn how various departments serve citizens.

The once-a-week classes last for two-and-one-half-hours and are taught by representatives from various County departments.  The program ends on June 20, 2013, with a graduation ceremony.

Citizens’ University began in April 2004 as a means of helping citizens understand County government operations in areas such as property taxes, county budget, police and fire training and community zoning policies.

There is $40 registration fee that covers some operating costs, course materials and a class shirt.  For 2013, the County has expanded the program to allow 30 participants, with priority given to Fulton County residents and high school students.  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Additional applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the 2014 program.

The program is managed by the Fulton County Office of Communications. For more information, call 404-612-8308 or 404-612-8300 or visit http://www.fultoncountyga.gov/fccomm-citizens-university.
