Fulton County Kicks Off Open Enrollment of the Health Insurance Marketplace | Print |

County Urges Citizens to Learn More and Get Ready for the Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment Beginning October 1 and hosts Enroll America to Provide Information at County Libraries

Fulton County urges residents to learn more and get ready to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace. Fulton County as official “Champions of Coverage” will kick off Open Enrollment on October 1 and throughout the month by hosting Enroll America at several libraries throughout the county to provide information to citizens on the marketplace and how to enroll. Enroll America is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to maximize the number of uninsured Americans who enroll in health coverage made available by the Affordable Care Act. Starting October 1, 2013, citizens can apply and enroll in health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Health coverage starts as early as January 1, 2014, and open enrollment ends on March 31, 2014.  Through the Marketplace, citizens can apply, compare options, and find out if they can get lower costs on monthly premiums or get free or low-cost coverage. When citizens are ready to enroll, they will decide how to pay their premiums or get help signing up for Medicaid or CHIP if they’re eligible.

On August 13, 2013, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius came to Fulton County government and met with Chairman John Eaves, Vice Chair Emma I. Darnell, Commissioner Joan Garner and local healthcare officials on the Affordable Care Act addressing the Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment and the need for “Champions of Coverage” to work within local communities to get information out to citizens.  Secretary Sebelius has said that Champions of Coverage include, “a network of volunteers on the ground in every state – health care providers, business leaders, faith leaders, community groups, advocates, and local elected officials – [who] can help spread the word and encourage their neighbors to get enrolled.”

On August 21, 2013, at its Recess Meeting, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards in support of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The resolution was co-sponsored by Vice Chair Darnell. The Affordable Care Act was adopted by Congress in 2010 and upheld by the U.S Supreme Court.  One of the biggest changes under the ACA will begin October 1 when individuals and families will be able to purchase health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
