Fulton County to Celebrate National County Government Month | Print |

Departments to highlight county resiliency programs and services

Fulton County will celebrate National County Government Month (NCGM) during the month of April to showcase how the county prepares for and responds to potential natural disasters and emergencies and other situations that the community may face. The theme for this year’s celebration of NCGM is “Ready and Resilient Counties: Prepare. Respond. Thrive.” Featured NCGM events include public tours of the Fulton County Emergency Services Department, Fire Department and Government Center.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners and the County Manager’s office will kick off National County Government Month on April 2, 2014 with a proclamation to recognize the month at the Board’s Regular Meeting and will host the first class of Fulton County’s Citizens University on April 3rd to educate citizens about the programs and services offered by their government.

Members of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners are also partnering with County Departments on other initiatives throughout the month including a community Crime & Safety Summit to promote public safety, Recycling Days for residents who would like to shred documents in a secure area or dispose of their bulky waste and a Job Fair for citizens searching for employment.

Additionally the Fulton County Cooperative Extension Office is hosting a free 4-H Spring Break camp from April 7-11, 2014 for youth ages 9-12. On Monday, April 7th, the students will take a tour of the Fulton County Government Center to include visiting the Emergency Services Department and receiving Fire Safety education. On April 18, 2014, the Fulton County Fire Department will open their doors to citizens to tour Fire Station 11 from 1pm to 3pm. On April 15, 2014, the Emergency Services Department will host a groundbreaking for the County’s Digital Radio System Upgrade and also open their doors to the public to host a tour of their Department on April 23, 2014, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The Fulton County Police Department will continue hosting its Citizen Police Academy during the month of April to educate citizens about public safety and the services they provide.

“We are proud of the programs and services we deliver to the nearly one million residents in Fulton County,” said Chairman John Eaves. “The Fulton County Board of Commissioners encourages all county residents to take advantage of National County Government Month outreach events to learn more about your county and how we can assist you and your loved ones.”

Since 1991 the National Association of Counties (NACo) has encouraged counties across the country to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of counties.
