Fulton County Invites Residents to Participate in “Taking Flight in the Community”Celebration Events | Print |

Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, present a month-long calendar of events in celebration of the grand opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC).   The events are intended to serve as an introduction of the new facility to the community, increase awareness about the center, its programming and activities.   The events are scheduled for April 15 through May 15, 2014.   All events are free and open to the public.


 
The first event scheduled is the Paper Airplane Making Workshop.   It kicks off the month-long pre-grand opening events on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the South Fulton Arts Center.   Imaginations will soar in this fun and interactive workshop where students will learn to make paper aircrafts with the use of templates and origami techniques.   The South Fulton Arts Center is located at 4645 Butner Road College Park, GA 30349.

Southwest Arts Center and Atlanta Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. present the motion picture
Red Tails a 2012 American war film produced by Lucasfilm stars Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. The film is a fictionalized portrayal of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African-American United States Air Forces (USAAF) servicemen during World War II. Screening followed by a Q&A session with Zellie Rainey Orr and some Tuskegee Airmen.

The Grand Opening for the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 10:00 a.m.   The center is a 16,200 square foot facility located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta, Georgia 30336, on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.

Designed as a community gathering place, the ACCC will focus on three areas of programming:

•  Aviation: Careers in aviation training opportunities, education resources, historical and contemporary flight-related exhibits
•  Community: A large Multipurpose Room available for civic meetings, events and activities along with an Outdoor Plaza and Green space
•  Cultural: Visual art exhibitions, public art installation, summer camps, visual art and dance instruction for children, teens and adults

Initiated by a community advisory group in 1999, the project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“The Stimulus Fund”)
and approved by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners in 2010.
