The Solicitor General’s office prosecutes misdemeanors such as simple battery, stalking, driving under the influence and criminal trespass. Under Smith’s leadership, the office handles approximately 20,000 cases in State and Magistrate Courts. She manages a staff of 100 temporary and part-time employees. The office has an average annual budget of $6 million.

Smith was elected Solicitor General in 1996 and was re-elected in 2000 and 2004. She was an Assistant Solicitor in the Fulton County Solicitor General’s office in the late 1980s before she joined a small litigation firm, Dwyer and White, formerly known as Weiner, Dwyer and Yancey. In 1991, Smith was appointed a Special Assistant Attorney General, litigating cases on behalf of the Department of Transportation.

Smith is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, TN and New York University School of Law.
