With the weather heating up, many more people will be heading to public swimming pools this summer. But is that pool safe? The Fulton County Board of Health inspects more than 1,800 pools throughout the county for safety. All public swimming pools must receive an annual operating permit, and inspections are performed routinely based on their operating season.
“Our main goal is to keep swimmers safe. To do that, we make sure pools are in compliance with county regulations to prevent illnesses and injuries that could arise from potential hazards,” says Dr. Brandon Leftwich, Environmental Health Director at the Fulton County Board of Health.
To make sure everyone has a fun and safe day at the pool, follow these steps:
- Check the pool for any substances or potential hazards
- Stay away from drains and suction outlets to prevent getting trapped
- Seek out clear pool water and avoid swimming in murky conditions
- Close all entry gates to prevent unsolicited guests from entering
- Identify safety equipment including (but not limited to): a light, strong pole at least 12 feet long with body hook; a ring buoy with rope attached; and operable emergency phones
- Supervise children to prevent hazardous incidents as much as possible
- Learn CPR to be able to assist in the event of drowning
If you follow these safety measures, you and your loved ones will hopefully be able to enjoy this summer without any major illnesses or injuries. For more information on pool inspections and regulations, visit our website at www.fultoncountyboh.com and click on the Environmental Health tab.
