Happening in Fulton: Dangers of Hot Cars

July 15, 2025

One of the things happening in the summer months is that parents and caregivers are leaving their children in cars in the heat. Hear more from Fulton County Police Captain Maureen Smith. A car in the summer in the heat can heat up to over 120°F when the temperature is just 80°F outside, so that's very hot. We get a lot of child related deaths as it relates to heat strokes and burn injuries inside of a vehicle. One of the things that you should do is stop, look, then lock. Always remember to do that before you leave your vehicle. Unfortunately a hard truth is that at least 39 children have died in 2024 in the backseat of a car where a parent or caregiver has left their children. The most important thing to do is to remember some of these steps and remembering that your child is in that back seat. Also remember that those same rules apply for your pets, and remember to not leave your pets outdoors for a long period of time during this heat.
