New Tax Exemption Postcards On The Way For Homeowners

March 16, 2026
Eligible residents can see reduction in property taxes
A postcard should be on its way from the Fulton County Board of Assessors to every homeowner who qualifies for a new homestead exemption on school district taxes.

If you believe you qualify for one of the new exemptions but do not receive a postcard by April 1, contact the Board of Assessors at www.fultonassessor.org/contact-us, boa@fultoncountyga.gov or 404-612-6440.

The new exemptions reduce taxable value for the school-district portion of property taxes, not county or city levies. There is no income requirement.

The new exemption for homeowners within the Fulton County School District can exempt 25% of assessed property value for owners who were at least age 65 as of January 1, and 50% of assessed value for owners who were at least age 70 as of January 1.

To qualify, taxpayers must have had a homestead exemption within the Fulton County School District for at least 5 of the last 6 years.

For homeowners who were at least age 65 by January 1 and live within the Atlanta Public Schools district, a new exemption can take off up to $50,000 of assessed value from Atlanta Public Schools property taxes. It may be combined with other Atlanta Public Schools exemptions.

If you already have a basic homestead exemption in place and meet criteria for one of the new exemptions, the appropriate discount will be automatically applied to your assessment – you don’t have to reapply.

April 1 is the standard deadline to apply for homestead exemptions that affect this year’s tax bill, but there will be a second window for such applications during the 45-day property valuation appeal period.
