The Fulton County Board of Commissioners proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month during its March 1, 2023 meeting as part of a long-standing, national observance that prioritizes the inclusion and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
To coincide with Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Fulton County’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) in collaboration with the Department of Arts & Culture presents the “Rise Up – It’s Show Time” Talent Extravaganza on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the West End Performing Arts Center, 945 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30310.
The Talent Extravaganza will be an inclusive event for people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to showcase their talents. Approximately 22 adults - ages 39-79, volunteered to participate after being presented with the talent show event. Featured acts will include a praise & worship session, dance performances, and solo and group vocalists. In addition, participating individuals will also assist with hosting and DJing duties.
In addition to the talent show, the Department of BHDD also hosted a free webinar on Thursday, March 9, entitled, IDD Caregiver Education Webinar: Estate Planning. The webinar provided critical information for family members and caregivers of individuals with IDD, as it related to planning for the individual's continuing care after their loved ones are deceased or incapacitated.
