Pump Smart: Protect Yourself from Skimming Scams
Skimming fraud happens when criminals secretly attach devices to gas pumps, ATMs, or payment terminals to steal card information. Protect yourself with these tips:
- Inspect card readers for loose, bulky, or damaged parts.
- Compare readers across pumps for differences.
- Choose safer pumps near attendants or in well-lit areas.
- Cover your PIN when entering it.
- Pay inside or use contactless payments when possible.
- Use credit, not debit for better fraud protection.
- Monitor your accounts regularly for unusual activity.
If you suspect a skimmer:
- Avoid the pump, notify the attendant, and contact authorities immediately.
- Stay alert and protect your money and identity!
